Falls Police Arrest Suspect in Crash and Run
Niagara Falls police have made an arrest in Friday’s hit-and-run crash at 22nd and Willow that left a bicyclist in critical condition at ECMC.
Based upon information from witnesses, Daniel KT Wijesiriwardena, 19, has been charged with multiple felonies, according to Niagara Falls officials. He is being held and was expected to be arraigned in Niagara Falls City Court today.
The injured bicyclist is in critical condition in the trauma ICU at ECMC.
The crash occurred about 8:35 p.m. Friday. Arriving officers found the injured 43-year-old man laying in the roadway. Members of the Niagara Falls Fire Department and an AMR ambulance crew also responded to treat the man. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center with serious injuries.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the bicyclist was travelling south on 22nd Street when he was hit in the intersection by a dark-colored SUV travelling eastbound on Willow Avenue. The vehicle then fled the scene. A black SUV with front end damage was being sought by police.
The Niagara Falls Police Department’s Crash Investigation Unit contiues to investigate the crash.
